I promise you: You already have enough people on your list. You really do.
So before you go out collecting more, have you checked how many of them have you turned from readers to donors?
How did they make the jump from readers to donors?
Can you pinpoint one email, event, activity etc that converted them?
If it was an email, can you replicate a similar email journey to convert readers to donors round the clock?
See, people don’t go from casual reader to donor in one step. It happens through a Conversion Sequence. A set of intentional, well-timed emails that build trust, create connection and remove hesitation
So what does it actually take?
First, you have to meet them where they are.
A new reader is curious—but also unsure. They’re wondering:
Can I trust this organization? Does my gift really matter? Where would my money go? - Particularly, if your 990 is not readily publicly available
For such a person, If you jump straight to “Donate now,” without context, you may lose them.
Second, you need to build belief before you ask.
This is where most emails fall short.
Instead of another update, your emails should help them:
See themselves as a part of your work (whether they have lived the experience of the problem you solve or know someone close who has been through it) Your email should call this out specifically.
Feel emotionally connected to the people you serve
Understand exactly how their support makes a difference
Giving isn’t logical first—it’s emotional.
Ask for a non-monetary commitment
For the hesitant by-stander, a small commitment that does not involve money but that will give them the satisfaction of making a small difference can move them from casual observer to active supporter. Small commitments can be:
Volunteer
Signing a card for sufferers of a condition / a petition etc
Asking them to share their own story
The goal is to get them invested in your mission
Remove hesitation.
Your readers won’t tell you what’s holding them back—but it’s there.
Uncertainty. Doubt. Timing. Relevance.
The right emails answer those objections before they stop someone from giving.
If you sent a solid welcome email sequence (included the automated email sequence ), you would already know what their hesitations are and how they would like to support you.
You can then use this information to craft messages that address those hesitations.
Once this foundation has been laid, you can guide them to a clear, natural next step.
Not a sudden ask. Not a last-minute appeal but moment that feels like:
“Yes, this makes sense. I’m ready.”
If your emails are being read but not converting, you don’t have an engagement problem—you have a pathway problem. My Automated Email Sequence for nonprofits includes 6 email sequences including a conversion sequence that can activate your readers to give.
